Acrypol 980 is a powder used to make clear, water-based gels & thicken creams & lotions. It is useful when a liquid needs more body, or when fine particles need help staying evenly mixed. A small amount can make a noticeable difference to the texture.
Also called Carbomer 980, it is used in skin-care gels, hair gels, lotions & other water-based personal care products. Makers can also test it in decorative craft gels and pigment gels. Check each full formula first: other ingredients can change how well the gel thickens or holds its texture.

How to use: Slowly sprinkle Acrypol 980 into water while stirring, then allow the powder to hydrate fully. Add a suitable neutraliser, such as diluted sodium hydroxide solution or triethanolamine, a little at a time. The mixture thickens as its pH rises. For a simple water-based gel, pH 6.5-7.0 is a practical starting target; measure the pH again after adding the rest of your ingredients.
Uses:
- Clear craft gels and water-based decorative gels.
- Gel paints or pigment mixes where a thicker texture helps control application. This would need testing with each pigment.
- Skin-care gels, such as aloe vera or face gels & Hair styling gels.
- Creams and lotions, where it helps thicken and stabilise the texture.
- Hand-cleaning gels, if the full formula is compatible.
- Shampoos and body-care products as a texture modifier.
Please note: Acrypol 980 is a thickener, not a preservative. Avoid breathing the powder & keep it out of your eyes. Close the pack tightly & store it in a cool, dry place.
