Marble Dust, White Stone Fine Powder as a Low Cost Resin Filler

Marble powder is finely ground calcium carbonate is added to polyester resin, polyurethane resin, epoxy, gypsum cement or other binders. Small objects are cast and cured in suitable molds. Make your own DIY Modeling paste, Textured Art paste.

Calcium carbonate is one of the most widely used minerals that is used in various industries such as rubber, plastic, paper, construction, detergents, food, pharmaceuticals, paints, sdhisive and coatings, both as fillers and colored coatings (due to its special white color). The size of these particles with 2500 mesh is extremly small and the size of each grain reaches 5 microns. This high-mesh micronized calcium carbonate powder widely used in paint, rubber, plastic, PVC and resin industry as a filler.

As a filler when you use with epoxy resin (including other types of resin) it's very cost effective and when you use small quantity combined with color pigments will result a beautiful hazy effect.

DENIFITS & ADVANTAGES OF STONE POWDER:

  • Highly efficient as a epoxy resin filler
  • Can be added to oil paint, cold wax mediums, gesso, mediums, plaster and primers.
  • improve thermal conductivity & heat dissipation factor
  • Electrical resistance
  • Increase heat resistance of the epoxy system
  • Opacity for coloring or pigmenting
  • Improve stability & less shrinkage
  • Increase impact resistance
  • Improved surface hardnes & compressive strength
  • Lower cost by volume
  • Increase Color Opacity For Coating And Casting Application (Hazy effect/marble effect)

MIXING TECHNIQUE WITH EPOXY RESIN

Please use a electronic scale when adding the stone powder filler with the epoxy resin. Ideally, marbel powder should be mix with resin first, once mix well and degassed, mix hardner. Faster degassing performance can be achieved by warm water bath (Resin & marble powder mixrture).

The amount of calcium carbonate will vary upon the intended application.
High filler loading >50% is possible but will affect the viscosity and cured mechanical properties.
A test study should be done to determine the optimum filler loading. For general use as a filler for an epoxy resin system, use 30% by weight as a starting point addition has shown a dramatic and balanced improvement in both physical and mechanical properties.

To increase color opacity for coating & casting applications, mix marbel dust 3-10% by weight.
