Stand Oil - Thickened Linseed Oil Medium for Artists & Makers
Smooth out your brushwork, boost gloss, and add control to your oil painting or creative work with Stand Oil.
Stand Oil is a heat-thickened linseed oil used by artists to slow drying, improve flow, and create a glossy, enamel-like finish. It’s made by heating linseed oil in the absence of oxygen, causing the oil to polymerize into a thick, honey like liquid. When mixed with solvents like Distilled Gum Turpentine or Artist’s White Spirit, it becomes a high quality medium for smooth layering and subtle blending.
Loved by oil painters in Sri Lanka for its Thick, honey-like, non-yellowing, flexible finish, Stand Oil also has a growing number of alternative uses beyond the studio.
Why Choose Stand Oil?
- Levels brushstrokes for a smooth, glassy surface
- Improves flow and blending control
- Slows drying time for better wet-on-wet techniques
- Reduces color sinking and patchy drying
- Resists cracking with a strong, flexible film
- Glossy finish without yellowing over time
- Essential for creating custom ‘fat over lean’ oil mediums
Alternative & Creative Uses (Beyond Oil Painting):
- Natural Wood Sealer (Experimental): Can be used on raw wood in small test areas as a penetrating sealer or polish due to its durable, flexible finish.
- Cold Weather Wood Conditioner: In traditional woodworking, stand oil has been used to condition handles or tool grips.
- Icon Painting & Religious Art: Used in egg tempera or iconography as part of multi-step painting layers for gloss and longevity.
- Surface Conditioner for Gilding: Occasionally used to prep surfaces for gold leaf or oil gilding techniques.
- Custom Mediums for Mixed Media: Artists blend it with resins or waxes to create hybrid media finishes.
- Clay Oil Burnishing (Trial use): Can be tested for polishing burnished clay surfaces where a soft, protective sheen is needed.
Note: Always test in small areas before using in non-traditional applications. Not all surfaces are compatible.
