Carboxymethyl Cellulose Powder (CMS) in Sri Lanka
Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC), also known as Cellulose Gum, is a versatile industrial-grade fibrous powder. Odorless and tasteless, it comes in a white or milk-white form. CMC serves as a thickener, coating agent, and adhesive in various applications. Upon complete dissolution in water, it creates a viscous solution whose consistency depends on water concentration. This resulting gel remains stable against heat, mild alkalis or acids, and microbial activity.
Widely utilized across industries, CMC functions as a viscosity modifier, thickener, and emulsion stabilizer. Its applications extend beyond food to include Glue (eg: PVA Glue), toothpaste, laxatives, diet pills, water-based paints, detergents, textile sizing, paper products, and reusable heat packs.
CMC is favored for its high viscosity, non-toxicity, and hypoallergenic properties. It exhibits good compatibility with other water-soluble substances such as glues, softeners, and resins. Examples include animal glues, dimethoxy dimethylurea gel, Arabic gum, pectin, tragacanth gum, ethylene glycol, sorbitol, glycerol, invert sugar, soluble starch, and sodium alginate.
